Statement: The Need to Reconsider Sanctions as a Form of Violence

The Europe Peace Foundation recognizes the current discussions at the G7 summit regarding the imposition of additional sanctions on Russia in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. While we acknowledge that sanctions are often seen as a means of exerting diplomatic pressure, we firmly believe it is crucial to reevaluate their efficacy and potential negative consequences, particularly for civilians caught in the midst of conflict.

Sanctions undoubtedly have an impact on ordinary people’s lives, exacerbating the already challenging circumstances they face. The unintended consequences of sanctions can be far-reaching, affecting economic stability and hindering access to essential resources. The burden of these measures is often borne by innocent civilians, who are already enduring the hardships of war. Basic necessities such as food, medicine, and other vital supplies become scarcer, leading to increased suffering and a deterioration of living conditions.

In light of these realities, the Europe Peace Foundation emphasizes the urgent need to prioritize peaceful resolutions and promote dialogue in order to bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine. While sanctions may serve as a tool for diplomatic pressure, they can inadvertently prolong the suffering of innocent people. Instead, we advocate for a concerted focus on achieving a lasting ceasefire, engaging in constructive negotiations, and finding mutually agreeable solutions that address the root causes of the conflict.

We call upon world leaders, international organizations, and all parties involved in the resolution of the Ukraine crisis to reconsider the continued use of sanctions as a primary approach. The imposition of sanctions must be carefully evaluated, taking into account their potential impact on civilians and the likelihood of achieving the desired outcomes. By redirecting our efforts towards peaceful dialogue, we can create an environment conducive to sustainable resolutions, ensure the protection of human rights, and restore stability to the affected regions.

As the G7 summit unfolds, we urge individuals and communities to remain informed and engaged in the ongoing developments. It is only through a comprehensive understanding of the decisions made and the strategies employed by world leaders that we can effectively contribute to the pursuit of peace and advocate for the well-being of those affected by the conflict.

The Europe Peace Foundation remains committed to supporting peaceful initiatives, fostering dialogue, and working towards a just and sustainable resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. We firmly believe that by prioritizing peace over further conflict and by reevaluating the use of sanctions, we can pave the way for a brighter future and alleviate the suffering endured by innocent civilians caught in the midst of war.
