Mr. KC Condemns Taliban’s Ban on Women and Girls in Education, Public Life, and Internet Access in Afghanistan

Statement

Tuesday, 23 September 2025 – I am deeply alarmed by the ongoing institutionalised and systematic discrimination imposed on women and girls in Afghanistan.

Recent reports indicate that the Taliban administration has imposed an internet blackout across several northern provinces, including Kunduz, Badakhshan, Baghlan, Takhar, and Balkh. This deliberate act silences women and girls, stripping them of their freedom of expression and further isolating them from the world.

The full, equal, and meaningful participation of Afghan women and girls in all aspects of life is not only their fundamental right, but also essential for Afghanistan’s peace, stability, prosperity and long-term development.

I strongly condemn the Taliban’s systematic exclusion of women and girls from education, the banning of books authored by women from university curricula, and the restrictions on their right to work and to participate in public life. These actions are clear violations of their fundamental human rights and freedoms, which must be respected and upheld.

I call on the Taliban authorities to immediately end these oppressive policies and to ensure that Afghan women and girls can continue to access education, work, the internet, and participate fully in public life. Women are human beings — their rights are non-negotiable.
