The Europe Peace Foundation stands in solidarity with the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as they endure one of the most severe humanitarian crises of our time. The recent escalation of conflict in eastern DRC, particularly in the provinces of North and South Kivu, has led to widespread displacement, loss of life, and the collapse of essential services. The March 23 Movement (M23), reportedly supported by Rwanda, has seized control of Goma, the capital of North Kivu, displacing over 700,000 individuals within the city and contributing to the country’s total of approximately 7.8 million internally displaced persons. This displacement has overwhelmed local communities and humanitarian organizations, exacerbating the already dire situation. The humanitarian impact is profound. Over 80% of health facilities in the affected regions are without essential medicines, and many have been forced to close due to insecurity and lack of resources. The World Food Programme has warned that approximately 13.7 million people across several countries, including the DRC, face severe hunger due to global aid cuts. Additionally, the recent outbreak of Ebola in central DRC further strains an already fragile healthcare system.
In response to the escalating violence, the Congolese government and the M23 rebel group have agreed to establish a ceasefire monitoring body, with support from the United Nations and other international partners. While this agreement is a step toward peace, it is imperative that all parties commit to a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire, ensuring the protection of civilians and the delivery of humanitarian aid. The Europe Peace Foundation calls upon the international community to increase funding and resources for humanitarian organizations operating in the DRC, promote inclusive and constructive dialogue among all parties involved in the conflict, ensure accountability for violations of international humanitarian law and human rights, and address the underlying issues contributing to the conflict, including competition over natural resources, ethnic tensions, and regional instability. We believe that through collective action and unwavering dedication, a peaceful and prosperous future is achievable for all.
