Statement on the Escalating Violence in Southeastern Colombia and Offer of Peace Mediation

Thursday, 28 August 2025 – I express deep concern over the recent surge of violence in southeastern Colombia, particularly in the municipality of El Retorno, Guaviare province. Reports indicate that members of the Central General Staff (EMC)—a dissident faction of the former FARC rebel group—were involved in a tragic incident that led to the loss of many lives and the kidnapping of several Colombian soldiers.

This alarming development underscores the urgent need to renew efforts toward lasting peace. Despite the historic 2016 peace agreement with the FARC, which marked a significant step forward, Colombia continues to grapple with the presence of armed groups and unresolved tensions stemming from a six-decade conflict that has claimed over 450,000 lives.

In light of this, I respectfully offer my support and mediation to facilitate dialogue between the Government of Colombia and all remaining dissident factions, including the EMC. My aim is to help foster a constructive and inclusive peace process that honors the aspirations of the Colombian people—who yearn for stability, development, and an end to violence.

I call upon all parties to consider the principles of the Global Peace 2030 Agenda, which seeks to promote reconciliation, human dignity, and sustainable peace across conflict-affected regions. Colombia’s future must be built on unity and mutual understanding, not continued strife.

Let us work together to ensure that the promise of peace becomes a reality for all Colombians.
